Munch has been present in Szeged for three years and now has more than a hundred partners in the city. The food rescue startup was introduced to the general public 8 months after its launch by the show Cápák Között, which the investors found so good that all five of them bought into the company with 1 percent each. Currently, only Petya Balogh is working with the young entrepreneurs, but István Lakatos is also supporting this cause from the background, the aim of which is to ensure that as little food as possible ends up in the trash.

The essence of Munch is that customers can buy products with cosmetic defects or near-expiration at a 50-70 percent discount. In the application, they choose which store they want to buy a Munch package from, pay for it online and go to pick it up at the specified time. In this way, businesses can sell these products instead of throwing them away, and those who do not insist on buying a specific product can get these foods even cheaper than in store promotions.

One of the company’s co-founders, Bence Zwecker, has a family from Szeged, so he visited the city for the anniversary. As he said, this is the most enthusiastic food rescue city in the whole country: in 3 years, 180 tons of food was avoided thanks to Muncholo.

– We started this business four years ago as university students. Our goal was not only to save food, but also to build a community. After the capital, Szeged was the largest gathering: the group here is not only large in number, but also very active, said Bence Zwecker. As an example, he mentioned that the group is also used here for the members to give each other different tips on how to use the munchies.

– The composition of the purchased packages is always a surprise, the customer only knows that he has paid for vegetables, fruit, baked goods, chilled products or, say, a menu portion. Thus, in the case of vegetables, for example, tips on how to use or preserve them can be very good. And with this, they give each other ideas that can be used in everyday life as well, on how to reduce food waste, which is important, since most food waste is generated at home – he explained.
