One storm chases the other. While state services, Enedis teams – which announced on Sunday November 5 the death of one of its employees mobilized in Brittany –, professionals and residents affected by Ciaran are working to erase the damage of this violent storm, a new depression, Domingos, crossed part of French territory during the night of November 4 to 5. This time, it is the Atlantic coast which has mainly suffered the attacks of this new meteorological episode.

In Charente-Maritime, wind gusts reached 155 km/hour at the Chassiron lighthouse (Oléron), 147 km/hour on the Île de Ré, 138 km/hour in Rochefort and 121 km/hour in La Rochelle. Spread across 230 municipalities in the department, 55,000 homes were without electricity on Sunday morning. The Enedis rapid electricity intervention force (FIRE) is hard at work, with reinforcements expected from the South and Corsica. A century-old carousel, crushed by a tree on Place Colbert, in the city center of Rochefort, bears witness to the violence of the wind.

The provisional report shows only one victim, a man slightly injured by the fall of a tree in La Rochelle, according to Mayor Jean-François Fountaine. Above all, the storm caused a lot of damage, particularly due to falling trees, branches, electrical wires and damaged roofs. The departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS) recorded nearly 200 interventions, mobilizing more than 700 firefighters during the night.

“No nerve center affected in Gironde”

Many roads were also flooded or blocked by falling trees, disrupting traffic, particularly in Châtelaillon-Plage, Oléron and Meschers-sur-Gironde. As a precaution, Yélo network buses do not operate in the La Rochelle area. Domingos will also have consequences for the start of the school year, scheduled for Monday, November 6. In Royan, the Emile-Zola college will remain closed, due to damage to part of the building’s roof caused by bad weather. Charente-Maritime remains on orange alert for floods, waves and submersion. After the severe weather of the last fortnight, the four rivers (Sèvre Niortaise, Charente, Seudre, Gironde) and the watercourses of the department are under close surveillance.

During the night, Gironde also recorded strong gusts of wind, up to 151 km/h on the coast. If these winds were impressive, the prefecture specifies that“no nerve center was affected in Gironde, no victims are to be deplored”. Nearly 800 firefighters were mobilized, and 24,000 homes are still without electricity. The tram and bus network, stopped on Saturday evening in Bordeaux, gradually resumed at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
