In the aftermath of the legislative elections, the Nupes struggles to remain grouped

by time news

In the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), there are the optimists, those who praise the “reunion” from a large family. Critics, like the secretary general of the French Communist Party (PCF), Fabien Roussel, who launched, from Sunday June 19, in the evening, an alliance which only speaks to part of France. The realists too, who see the first tests of its solidity looming. You won’t have to wait long.

In its founding pact, the Nupes, which has 142 seats, had promised each a parliamentary group, coordinated in an intergroup. A basis for discussion which had made possible this rapprochement between left-wing forces. But since Monday, June 20 in the morning, the new deputies, “rebellious” above all, insist on being counted as “the first opposition group”in front of the National Rally (RN).

Group or intergroup, in the National Assembly, it is not the same thing. Under the regulations, the various powers are allocated according to the numbers of the former and not the latter. So, within the Nupes, the question begins to be asked. From the end of the lips, first. “For the moment, we had effectively started with an intergroup, with each of the components having its own group. We will see each other again with the partners of the Nupes, and that is probably what we are committed to., said Monday morning on RTL, Mathilde Panot, well on her way to remaining president of the group La France insoumise (LFI) in the Assembly. Group or intergroup, there is now a shadow of a doubt.

“Four groups will be stronger than one”

A little before 3 p.m., Jean-Luc Mélenchon leaves the headquarters of LFI. In front of the cameras waiting for him, he throws a bomb. Or, rather, a « proposition ». “The Nupes should form a single group in Parliament”he says. “I do not propose the merger”he assures, sketching the idea that everyone keeps a ” delegation “as in the European Parliament. “Everyone can go back to school, but the signal that will be sent to the country is a blockhe justifies. Last night, I had the impression that this was the state of mind in particular of Julien Bayou and Olivier Faure. »

The barrage is immediate. One by one, the socialist, ecologist and communist staffs say “no”. “The left is plural, it is represented in its diversity in the National Assembly. It is a force at the service of the French people. Wanting to remove this diversity is a mistake, and I oppose it”, writes the first, on Twitter, the socialist Valérie Rabault, president of the socialist group under the previous legislature. PS spokesman Pierre Jouvet adds: “There will be a socialist group”.
