In the Assembly the deputies agree in good spirits in favor of the French chips

Would the potato gain consensus in the Chamber? The sometimes heated budget debates in the National Assembly came to an unexpected halt on Friday, when deputies almost unanimously approved an amendment in favor of French potato chip producers.

At the beginning of the evening, as an aperitif before a night session that promised to be plentiful, the elected representatives adopted an amendment coming from the Macronist, RN and Socialist ranks, aimed at reducing the taxation of energy used in chip factories.

Currently, producers of dehydrated vegetables or plants benefit from reduced taxation on natural gas consumption… unless they produce potatoes. It is precisely this exception that the deputies corrected on Friday, to allow producers to be competitive with their foreign competitors – especially Belgians – who already benefit from a reduced price.

By correcting this distortion, “we are promoting the relocation of production and strengthening our food sovereignty,” said RN MP Guillaume Florquin. The bill for public finances will not be too high, of the order of 4 million euros, underlined the elected macronist Nicole Le Peih.

“Beyond the slightly funny side” of this debate, “it is true that the majority of chips produced in France are often artisanal and are still better for health than industrial chips,” observed Éric Coquerel (LFI) .

Announcing the result of the vote, the president of the session Naïma Moutchou finished relaxing the atmosphere with a delightful slip of the tongue, announcing 202 “potatoes”, instead of “voters”.
