REPORTAGE – While visitors wander the Museum’s galleries and the Carrousel, every day, around a hundred scientists use cutting-edge instruments, including a new particle accelerator, to study and restore works of art.

It is a well of light where master paintings, sculptures, mummies, and other collection pieces from the greatest museums are regenerated. In the basement of the Louvre Palace, under the Carrousel, the latest technologies and scientific expertise are put to the service of heritage. This laboratory is one of the three sites of the Center for Research and Restoration of Museums of France (C2RMF). The other two, two restoration workshops, are located at the Flore pavilion of the Louvre, not far from there, and in Versailles at the Petite Écurie du roi. The Carrousel laboratory brings together around a hundred scientists who work there while onlookers walk around above their heads.

To enter, you have to take a small hidden staircase behind the Porte des Lions. The experts’ offices, a documentation center, a conference room and laboratories of all kinds are lined up on three floors. It is at level -3 that the objects begin their journey. Rooms…
