In the first weekend, over 71,000 people came to Vlny, a new film by director Jiří Mádl about Czechoslovak Radio’s foreign correspondents in the 1960s. The sci-fi horror film Alien: Romulus is doing best in the world, the results of which exceeded analysts’ expectations.

According to data published by the Union of Film Distributors on Monday, the historical drama Vlna grossed 12.4 million crowns in the first weekend and was seen by 71,213 viewers. This is the third best start of the year among Czech films, so far only Zápisník alkoholíčky, which was seen by 104,000 people in the first weekend, and Aristokratka ve vár had higher numbers. It debuted in January with 75,000 moviegoers.

Overall, the most requested Czech film of the year so far is Zápisník alkoholíčky. In more than a month, 442,000 people saw it in cinemas across the country, and it has already grossed almost 80 million crowns.

The new sci-fi horror movie Alien: Romulus came in second place in the attendance table in the Czech Republic, with 47,000 viewers. But it is above all a global success. It grossed $41.5 million in North American theaters in its first weekend, and $108.2 million worldwide, equivalent to 2.4 billion crowns.

According to the AFP agency, this is clear proof that the series founded in 1979 by director Ridley Scott continues to scare enough people. And this despite the fact that the eighty-six-year-old Scott only supervised the novelty and left the direction to the Uruguayan creator Fede Álvarez, several generations younger.

In addition to the USA and Canada, the film was most successful in China, South Korea, Great Britain and France. According to David A. Gross of the analysis company Franchise Entertainment Research, it recorded the second best start of the entire space saga, which counts nine pictures, including two called Alien vs. A predator from the beginning of the millennium.

Of all of them, 2012’s Prometheus had the most impressive start. It grossed $51 million in its first weekend in the US and Canada.

The newcomers are also enjoying favorable reviews, with an average score of over 80 percent from critics and viewers on Rottentomatoes.com.

Alien: Romulus was created with a budget of around 80 million dollars, with total sales of over 108 million dollars, so it already paid for itself in the first weekend and is starting to make money. At the same time, the Walt Disney Company originally wanted to present it only on the streaming platform Hulu, which it owns. In the end, however, she decided to try her luck in cinemas in this case as well – and it paid off, states The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

According to the website Variety.com, the new Alien continues the winning campaign of the Walt Disney Company, which first celebrated success with the audience at the end of spring with the action spectacle Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, then exceeded expectations with the animated film In the Head 2 and in recent weeks has been enjoying the popularity of the new comic book Deadpool & Wolverine.

“It’s an encouraging turn for the better after Disney experienced one commercial disappointment after another in 2023, starting with the Marvels movie to Indiana Jones and the Beast or the Haunted House remake to the animated Wish,” Variety.com recalls some of the lesser-visited titles of last year .

On the other hand, the adaptation of the computer game Borderlands is not doing well even in its second week in cinemas. It grossed just $2.35 million from screenings in 3,125 theaters across the U.S. and Canada, and its worldwide gross stalled at around $18.5 million.

The film had a budget of about 115 million dollars. “Borderlands is clearly one of the biggest flops of the year,” Variety.com says.

This film directed by Eli Roth and starring Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett is not attracting too much interest even in the Czech Republic, where it dropped out of the top ten most visited last weekend. A little over 2,000 people came to see him all over the country.
