While no other major Democrats had announced plans to challenge Harris, the DNC’s announcement officially opens the vice president’s path to an uncontested race for her party’s nomination just nine days after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, leaving a vacancy in the Democratic nomination.

Harris will now be voted on by delegates to the party’s national convention, which will formally confirm the nominee in a new online voting procedure the party adopted last week.

Voting will start on August 1 and end on August 5, according to the announcement.

According to estimates by the Associated Press, Harris is the overwhelming choice of convention delegates to replace Biden as the party’s presidential nominee and face former President Donald Trump on the ballot in November.

According to party rules, a candidate qualifies for the nomination by submitting a notarized declaration of candidacy, meeting the legal requirements to become president, and obtaining at least 300 electronic signatures from delegates, with no more than 50 signatures from one delegation counted toward the minimum number of 300.

The DNC said 3,923 delegates had submitted petitions to nominate Harris.

Despite the early vote on the nominee, delegates will still gather as planned for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in late August.

The party will hold a state-by-state vote on the floor of the convention, followed by speeches by Harris and her vice-presidential nominee formally accepting nominations.
