Modern Russian poetry is rapidly getting younger. On May 29, the final of the Leonid Filatov Poetry Festival was held at the Central House of Actors, which resulted in an almost sensational victory for 19-year-old Elizaveta Evstigneeva from Moscow. What trends in the modern literary process did the festival help to reveal? What do young writers write about, think about and how do young writers see the future? We talked about this with the founder and artistic director of the Moscow Theater of Poets, Vlad Malenko.

– We have one measure – the quality of the text. We were just saying that some of our winners are now “on Upper Lars”, while others are raising money for drones for the Russian army.

– Did you get the impression that most of the jury members are from the patriotic camp?

– This is a misleading impression. I would not call Igor Volgin, Dmitry Vodennikov, Andrey Shcherbak-Zhukov or Svetlana Shetrakova “ideologically colored” writers, Z-poets. I don’t like this word, because it turns out that I became a Z-poet at the age of 7 when I looked at the fireworks from the window in Arms Lane. I regret that Vsevolod Emelin, a connoisseur of poetry and an intellectual, was not at the ceremony. And as for the texts of the guys, they have become deeper. Nine years have passed, this is enough to assess the dynamics of development. From the works evaporated infantilism.

– Generational?

– Yes, they played it, because it was welcomed – performances, performances, articles in newspapers. In what surrounded them, there was a destructive lack of commitment to a wife, parents, homeland and a lack of love for life, there was a flirtation with death. Since the start of the special operation, everyone has sobered up a bit. Today, young writers philosophize, think, and eventually stumble upon the truth.

– Does the young poetess-winner, whose name has now been heard in all the media, really deserve the attention?

“We have looked at her for a long time. This 19 year old girl did it all. I thought Konstantin Komarov, an amazing philologist and poet, would win.

– Whom did you root for, admit it?

– For Sofia Yudina. Absolutely pure child. I love what she does on set. Rooted for her and Dmitry Terentiev. As a poet, he shows primordial, ornamental things close to Yesenin or Vasily Belov. As for the winner, Lisa, I now have a huge responsibility, I need to fulfill her request.

– What’s happened?

— I will talk to the rector of LIT about her reinstatement there. I don’t know how to do it right. Rules and laws cannot be broken. I will consult with Igor Volgin.

– Was she expelled?

– Yes. I don’t know the details, but there is such a story that I even quoted Akhmatova’s words from the stage: “What kind of biography is being made for our redhead.” Liza, of course, is not red-haired and not Brodsky, but “expelled” sounds beautiful in this context. She stood with two prizes (“Filatov Festa” and the audience award) and said: “I have only one request: so that my parents do not worry, reinstate me at the Literary Institute.”

– The final was overshadowed by a mini-scandal with accusations of cheating votes for potential winners. How was the situation resolved?

– When voting in social networks, it is impossible to establish the mechanics of hypothetical cheating. We asked experienced bloggers, experts in network security, and they advised us to do as we did. We held the second round, in which it was definitely impossible to cheat anything. But this caused a protest of the finalists and insults on their part. A couple of people have declared non-participation. And then we invited all three who fought for the sympathy of the audience on the Web to the final, so that there would be no misunderstandings. On May 29 we met as friends.

– In the comments, I saw a reproach that actors pretending to be poets win at Filatov Fest.

– I strongly disagree. We can win the author, who hardly speaks in public. A poet from St. Petersburg, Evgeny Dyakonov, who works as a tour guide, has the skill of intelligibly addressing people. I really appreciate this Mayakov’s intelligibility. When Dostoevsky delivered a speech about Pushkin in the Noble Assembly, he did it to the envy of the entire future Moscow Art Theater. Even Turgenev cried, and they reconciled. He read The Prophet so coolly that Shchepkin and Mochalov would envy him. Look how young Brodsky sings – like an ancient Greek! I do not remember about our sixties – Yevtushenko, Voznesensky and Akhmadulina. And how Akhmatova read her poems, and Blok gave lectures. How did the Severyanin perform! And what a “non-acting actor” Sergei Yesenin! I am sure that a poet needs to be able to be an actor.

The winner Elizaveta Evstigneeva told MK:

— I am very glad to speak with dignity, I am glad that competent people appreciated my works so highly. Igor Leonidovich (Volgin. – I.V.) gave me the highest score.

Here is an excerpt from her work: Sunday Communion.

Baby, come on.

Earthly and heavenly

Everything is ahead of you.

Silently freezes over the temple

Gilding of ancient tsats.

A piece for the Son

A spoon for the Father.
