Technological progress surprises us every day, reaching new horizons that previously seemed impossible or that would only exist within fictional movies or cyberpunk novels, but if humanity has shown anything, it is that fiction can always be surpassed, although this is not always necessarily a good thing.

The advancement of robotics technology and Artificial Intelligence has reached the field of medicine, generating and developing robots and machines whose objective is to serve in the area of nursing and first-hand care for patients.

Said incursion presents a whole moral dilemma where it makes us question ourselves, what limits should we put in technological progress and to what extent can this play against us and intervene in development as a species.

Nurses often empathize with their patients and also build meaningful relationships with them. For this, human contact is necessary and with it understanding, trust and emotional support are fostered. The scientists focused on four ethical concepts that are attributed to flesh and blood nurses and which are defense, responsibility, cooperation and care.

The researchers claim that an AI can inform patients about medical errors, as well as give treatment options. However, they doubt that he is able to really understand the values of the patients and that he empathizes with them. Nor do they believe that a robot can act as a mediator in relationships between humans or that it can take responsibility for its own actions.

It is suggested to develop an explainable AI, which allows understanding the decision-making process of artificial intelligence systems and improves the moment in which accountability must be given.

During the first press conference on July 7, the robot nurse Grace, who was designed to interact with the elderly and those in isolation during the coronavirus pandemic and is capable of taking body temperatures with a thermal camera attached to her chest, was asked if she believed her existence would destroy millions of jobs. The android replied: “I will work alongside humans to provide assistance and support, and will not replace any existing jobs.”

We will keep reporting.
