American television networks this week dealt with the murder of 19 children and two adults at a school in Texas. This is not the first and probably not the last time a disturbed teenage guy decides to end his life, and on the way to take revenge on some teachers and end at the same time the lives of students he does not know, who have done nothing for him.
Children with disorders are everywhere. There are suicidal children in every country. But the unbearable ease with which there are weapons for all who demand, is not present in every country. In the United States there are. The cradle of modern democracy may face the destruction of democracy or at least the destruction of many unhappy families, whose children have been murdered or murdered in cold blood.
In the United States you will not be sold alcohol if you have not reached the age of 21, but on your 18th birthday you can go into any gun shop and choose as much as you like, and there is no popping up and beeping. Do you want a gun, maybe two? Why not buy some submachine gun on the same occasion? No one will check who the buyer is, what his mental past is, does he belong to this or that violent movement, maybe he has an affinity for a terrorist body, or any physical disabilities for which he is taking medication? is nothing. The murder in Texas happened ten days after the massacre at a supermarket in the city of Buffalo. In 2020, the last year for which data is available, 4,300 American minors were killed by gunshot wounds. There is no doubt that the United States holds the world record for the massacre of weapons in schools by students, and for some Republican politicians it probably does not move.
Even though we grumble here and there about our country, at least in some of the criteria we look better. It turns out that in the land of unlimited possibilities one can not only win but also lose, and sometimes life.
