In the National Assembly, the far right remains in Perchoir. Gathered around the president (Renaissance), Yaël Braun-Pivet, the ten presidents of the parliamentary groups decided unanimously, Tuesday September 26, to renew the office of the institution elected in June 2022. By this arbitration, recorded after only half an hour, they allow the two vice-presidents of the National Rally (RN) – Sébastien Chenu (North) and Hélène Laporte (Lot) – to retain their position without going through a new vote , October 2.

The highest body of the National Assembly – which includes Yaël Braun-Pivet, the six vice-presidents, three quaestors and twelve secretaries – the office organizes the daily life of the Palais-Bourbon: management of the institution’s budget, sanctions against the against deputies or admissibility of legislative proposals.

The decision of the group presidents was not self-evident, due to the divide crossing a large part of the political groups with, on the one hand, the opponents of the institutionalization of the RN and, on the other, the supporters of a proportional reflection of groups within the highest authorities. For the latter, it was necessary for the RN, with its status as the second largest group in the Chamber with 88 deputies, to have fair representation.

This is a big difficulty for us”recognized, Saturday on France Culture, the president (Renaissance) of the law commission, Sacha Houlié.

But on Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, put an end to the desires that emerged among her majority. “We cannot exclude the extremes from our institutions”, she declared, in favor of the status quo, in front of the deputies of the presidential camp (Renaissance, MoDem, Horizons) in the National Assembly. A reference to the RN and La France insoumise (LFI), designated by the Macronists as being outside the “republican arc”, although the head of state, Emmanuel Macron, invited the leaders of these two parties to his “Saint-Denis meeting”, August 30.
