Of them, 20,657 students will start their studies in the 1st grade. The data on the number of students can be clarified when the schools have entered the information in the State Education Information System (VIIS).
In the 2024/2025 school year, 25,879 teachers will work in municipal and private educational institutions.
For the fifth year, a new “Teaching Force” course will join the family of teachers – 102 future teachers who passed the selection this spring and will work in schools in parallel with their pedagogy studies at the chosen university. 49% of them will teach STEM subjects, or the field of mathematics, science and technology.
In parallel with working at the school, 53 “Mācītspēks” pedagogues with already acquired teaching qualifications will continue their second or induction year of studies. They will learn one of the four professional competence development training programs at the University of Latvia – “Classroom management for an effective lesson”, “Change management in education”, “Special and inclusive education”, “Technology-enriched organization of the learning process”.
This year, 197 secondary schools and 30 state gymnasiums will open their doors. This is four educational institutions less than a year earlier. The number of elementary schools founded by municipalities has also decreased – a total of 224 elementary schools will open their doors this year, which is 30 elementary schools less than in the 2023/2024 academic year.
Also, the number of primary schools has decreased by seven educational institutions – they are 29 this year. On the other hand, the number of special educational institutions has decreased by two, and 37 educational institutions will open their doors.
The preliminary data of the Ministry of Education and Culture show that the number of students in vocational education will remain at the previous level this year – around 28,000 students will study in 53 vocational education institutions. Around 10,000 students will start their studies in the first year.
