In the race for the Elysée, the favorite Gaullists have gone astray

by time news

Time.news – They are the president of the Ile-de-France region, Valerie Pecresse, and Eric Ciotti, deputy from the Maritime Alps, the two candidates who passed the first round of the primaries of Les Republicains, the French conservative party, and now they will go to the ballot that will decide the Gaullist presidential candidate on Saturday.

The result was just announced during the live stream of the vote. This is an upset since polls favored the president of the Upper France region, Xavier Bertrand. Also out are the former European Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, and the outsider Philippe Juvin, head of the emergency room of a large Parisian hospital.

Ciotti won 25.6% of the votes of the 140,000 eligible members, Pecresse 25%, Barnier 23.9%, Bertrand 22.3% and Juvin 3.1%. Defeated in the first round of the primary for Gaullist candidate for the French presidency, Xavier Bertrand and Philippe Juvin invited members on Twitter to vote solidly for Pecresse.

Barnier also expressed his support for Pecresse who, he wrote in a tweet, considers the candidate “most prepared to win the presidential election”.
