The role of “self-governing lords” was briefly taken on by the students of the 3rd grade of the Dolianon Gymnasium following a relevant invitation from the Municipality of Pogoni, as part of an educational activity, with the aim of getting to know the institution of Local Self-Government.

The students sat on the chairs of the municipal council in the first mock meeting, which was held with particular success and in a completely harmonious atmosphere, being a foretaste of the way the top body of the Municipalities operates.
The students were welcomed by the Deputy Mayor of Education, Anastasios Younis, presenting them the characteristics of the Municipality, as well as the comparative advantages it has, while he made extensive reference to the support of the municipal authority to all school units and students. “We are particularly pleased that you have shown great interest in the functioning of the city council, which proves that you are active and thoughtful citizens. A total of 270 students study in the Municipality and the municipal authority is on your side in every way and with all the means it has both in terms of infrastructure and in terms of supporting all educational activities”, he underlined.
The president of the body, Grigorios Bondinis, spoke about the role and operation of the municipal council, who explained to them in detail the process of the meeting, from the way the agenda was drawn up to the moment of voting and the recording of the minutes. “Your familiarity with the Municipality is of primary importance. Active participation in decision-making processes and public affairs is of immediate concern to you and today’s visit is an opportunity to gain an insider’s understanding of the role and importance of Local Government. In the municipal council, all decisions are taken that directly and indirectly concern the citizens. It is the highest democratic body and the decisions are voted by the municipal councilors that the citizens have elected. It is essentially the voice of the citizens”, he pointed out.
The baton was then taken by the children, who met with the sole topic of the agenda: strays and ways to deal with the problem. The “municipal councilors” submitted evidence and proposals, unanimously voting to hold an open event with the participation of agencies, organizations and citizens with the aim of collecting money that will be allocated for the care of stray animals.
It should be noted that in the next period there will be other municipal council simulations by students of the Municipality of Pogoni.
