A few months ago, three immigrants who arrived illegally in the United States via the Rio Grande were sent to prison after a hearing lasting just five minutes, described by The New York Times. Like more than 104,000 people since 2003, they have since been detained there as “key witnesses” for, in their case, a possible future human trafficking trial at the US-Mexico border.

“Since these migrants are in an irregular situation, the judge decided to send them behind bars. However, they are not being prosecuted for a crime, but simply forced to testify against the smugglers accused of bringing them into the United States.”
