The US federal government will provide a $1.5 billion loan to help restart a nuclear power plant in southwest Michigan. This was reported by the Associated Press agency with reference to state authorities, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
It is noted that Holtec International acquired the 800-megawatt Palisades nuclear power plant in 2022 and planned to dismantle it. However, now, with the support of the administration of US President Joe Biden and state authorities, it is planned to restart it by 2025. To do this, appropriate inspections, tests, and permission from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be carried out.
It will be the first nuclear power plant in the United States to restart, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said.
The Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is located along Lake Michigan and began operation in 1971. It was stopped in May 2022. The nuclear power plant is currently owned by Holtec International, which has announced long-term commitments to purchase electricity from the plant from two energy cooperatives.
