It is the fruit of a “a long process of negotiations”far from over yet. At the Faculty of Sciences of the Paris Cité University, a project that promises to be great has been started: training teachers from all disciplines to the challenge of the century, of the climate crisis . For sure “emergency” to make a big change in teaching in a changing environment, and therefore to give all the keys to those who provide them, Gaëlle Charron, teacher researcher in physics, has been causing her talented staff for several years to ask for a policy this word is love.

How to do this when French universities are already tightening their belts? “In Paris Cité, the teacher budget was cut by 20% last year. Therefore, when we talk about the need to find money, we cannot get some strong reactions of rejection. “note his successor for domestic change. However, he managed to use the envelope distributed by the National Research Center for educational innovation – 2 million euros over ten years – and the first training courses for students and teachers will see the light of day in 2023.

“This makes it possible to get resources. It’s not up to the challenge, but we’re making progress”he noted. Each year, fifty volunteer teachers are trained, spending eighteen hours exploring issues of world boundaries and sustainability, and educational tools to integrate them into their discipline. “We are lobbying to make this mandatory for all incoming teachers. But this has not yet been approved: for this, you need to find a strong political will at the university management level. »he insisted.

Reason 2025

However, it is impossible to do without thinking about the deep training of the teaching staff, while universities and special schools are asked to integrate the issues of change into their courses. All undergraduate students must in fact be trained in these matters by 2025, asked the Ministry of Higher Education, in a 2023 strategic note, accepting the recommendations from the report by climate scientist Jean Jouzel on the subject.

But this order was first made without any group working on the request of support teachers, who are not experts in these matters, will have to change their courses and models – still the subject. Finally, after consultation at the beginning of the summer, a specific policy document was sent to the principals in September. It is recommended that all new entrants take courses, adding a mandatory component in the second hours they are devoted to their academic studies.
