Russia has asked China for military equipment to support its invasion of Ukraine, the British Times reported tonight (Sunday). According to US sources, what raises concerns in the White House is that Beijing’s aid to Russia could undermine Western efforts to help Ukrainian forces defend their country.
U.S. officials told the Financial Times that Russia had sought military equipment and additional assistance since the beginning of the invasion. Officials declined to give exact details about what Russia requested.
A senior U.S. official said the United States was preparing to warn its allies not to help Russia, citing several indications that China might help Russia. .
The White House did not respond to a request for comment. The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.
China presented itself as a neutral player in the crisis in Ukraine and refused to condemn Russia for the invasion. The US also saw no sign that Chinese President Xi Jinping was willing to put any pressure on Putin to stop Russian aggression.
The two leaders signed a joint statement in Beijing last month, describing the Beijing-Moscow partnership as a “borderless” friendship, another sign that the two capitals are getting even closer to each other.
