Al-Marsad newspaper: The family doctor, Dr. Saud Al-Shehri, revealed the causes that lead to water poisoning, and how to prevent it.
What is water poisoning?
Al-Shehri said, in a video clip on his Twitter account, that water poisoning is a rare but scientifically known condition.
Causes
Al-Shehri added: “Water poisoning mostly occurs in people who work hard, “thirsty and drink a lot”, or in athletes.”
He continued, “There is no minimum for drinking water, but since the kidneys filter only 0.8 to one liter per hour, logically, if you exceed that, you will be taking an excessive amount.”
And he continued: “You may have drank other drinks such as tea or coffee, and others in addition to water, and there is only 4.5 liters of water in your body, when you do that, you enter approximately 30% of your body fluids.”
Methods of prevention
Al-Shehri continued: “We should not stay away from water at all, but you need only 2.5 to 3.5 liters of water per day, that is, 10 to 12 cups.”
And he concluded his speech, that “Oxford University said that the current safety guidance, no more than 1 to 1.5 liters of drinking water during heavy sweating.”
