On Monday, US Vice President Kamala Harris joined the list of vice presidents who ran in the presidential race and lost, and found themselves in a position that forced them to supervise the official certification of this loss, as the vice president is the president of the Senate, according to the US Constitution.
As Vice President, Harris certified the victory and defeat of President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 elections, in a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate on Monday, which passed calmly and in the usual routine manner, including an embarrassing situation for Harris, after dramatic events witnessed in the last session to certify the election results 4 years ago, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to stop the certification of his loss.
Harris was exposed to an embarrassing situation after the husband of a Republican senator refused to shake her hand during her inauguration ceremony.
Bruce Fischer, the husband of Republican Senator Deb Fischer, avoided Harris’s outstretched hand during the swearing-in ceremony on Friday in the Capitol building, and only offered a nod of the head and a brief word of thanks in return, after his wife was sworn in.
Harris raised her eyebrows visibly and frowned when the group turned to the front to take a photo, while Bruce did not smile.
“It’s okay, I won’t bite…don’t worry,” Harris said in response to Fisher’s apparent reluctance to stand near her during the photo.
Liberals and many Republicans criticized the 73-year-old Fischer’s action, which came just weeks before Harris and Biden left office, and Republican President-elect Donald Trump and his vice president, J.D. Vance, took over.
