Social networking sites were abuzz with footage in which German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock appeared after her arrival with her French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, this Friday morning, to the Syrian capital, Damascus, wearing a bullet-proof vest.
The video, which was circulated on social media, showed the first footage of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock exiting a military plane, wearing a bullet-proof vest.
“The minister’s appearance in the protective vest, along with her accompanying statements about the possibility of a new political beginning between Europe and Syria and between Germany and Syria,” in Damascus sparked many reactions and questions on social media sites, with some describing her as contradictory.
One of the commentators on the video wrote, “The minister’s behavior is justified and precautionary due to the presence of many armed factions in Syria, while others indicated that the minister’s behavior reflects a lack of comfort and insecurity regarding the current field and security situation in Syria.”
The German Minister had stated before her departure from Damascus, “Our visit to Damascus is a signal from the European Union of the possibility of beginning a new political relationship with Syria. The Syrians have an opportunity to take the fate of their country into their own hands again.”
While Noel Barrow from Damascus expressed his hope that Syria would be “sovereign, stable and calm,” and added: “Less than a month ago, a new hope emerged thanks to the mobilization of Syrian women and men,” adding: “Hope for a sovereign, stable and calm Syria. It is hope.” Real, but fragile.”
