“How much do you want to pay for your wand?” » The question is surprising and yet the cashiers at the Mamatte bakeries-cafés in Amiens (Somme), Longueau (Somme) and Lille (North) ask it several times a day to their customers who buy traditional baguettes.

To fight inflation, Maxime Lefebvre, the founder of the brand which has four stores, made a radical decision: “The baguette is a basic necessity,” he explains. We sell about 1,500 a day. The period is complicated for everyone, we see it in the level of sales of so-called pleasure products. I wanted to participate to help those who are most in need. However, we have set a minimum amount of 60 cents. Normally, it is 1 euro, which is already a low price. We also offer our products from the day before at -50% or 3 + 1 free for breads, cakes, pastries… »

The operation has been launched since November 2 and for one month. But an assessment is already emerging: “20 to 25% of customers pay 60 cents, 10 to 15% 80 to 90 cents. The vast majority continue to give 1 euro or more. Some pay 1.50 euros for it, saying that they want it to benefit people in difficulty and that the operation can last more than a month. »

“There are so many people in trouble, if that helps them…”

Philippe and Laurence, two retirees from Amiens, baguette in hand, confide: “We gave as usual. It’s an operation that surprises. There are so many people in trouble. If it helps them, especially since the baguettes are very good…”

“I will talk to people in difficulty about it. I think the price of 1 euro is very good. Eating hot bread has a price,” confides Taho, 16, who is waiting for his baguette to come out of the oven. Behind him, Jean-Marie, 69 years old, patient. “One euro is reasonable. Elsewhere, it is 1.20 euros, 1.30 euros. It’s a great operation. »
