Rdare was the only possible survivor. End of the debate, which has been going on for more than 20 years. James Cameron, director of the legendary film Titanic, probably wanted to put an end to these endless discussions. So, as revealed by BFMTV, the filmmaker – on a promotional tour for Avatar 2: The Way of the Water – commissioned a scientific study to prove that only one person could survive on this famous door transformed into a makeshift raft. “We did a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who replicated the raft from the movie,” he says.

To do this, two stuntmen with the same body mass as Kate Winslet – Rose in the film – and Jack – Leonardo DiCaprio – were recruited. They were covered with sensors, then plunged into icy water, to return to the conditions of the famous scene of the film. “We did tests to see if they could have survived by various methods, and the answer was that there was no way they could both have survived. Only one could survive, ”says James Cameron.

Soon a documentary

A scientific conclusion to this debate therefore, and which goes in the direction of the scriptwriting desires of the director: “Jack had to die […]. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a film about love, sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice”, judges the producer.

For the most skeptical of fans – or the most Jack-loving ones – proof will soon be added. The forensic experiment was filmed, and will be the subject of a documentary scheduled for February 2023, at the same time as the return to the dark rooms of Titanic, in remastered version, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film. The opportunity also for James Cameron to turn the page, visibly tired of this eternal debate: “Perhaps after twenty-five years, I will finally no longer have to answer this question. »
