In Japan, some schools have agreed to lighten their regulations, deemed too strict. Wearing a ponytail or wearing underwear of a color other than white could now be allowed for young girls.

In Tokyo, middle and high school girls could finally be free to choose the color of their underwear. From April 1, rules deemed too strict by the population will be abolished. A decision taken by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and relayed by the newspaper Asahi Shimbun. Among these rules, the prohibition of underwear of a color other than white. “If these rules have drawn so much criticism, it is because they are very unpleasant for everyone. It is logical that they are abolished”, says a 17-year-old high school student. “Other schools should think about it,” he continues.

Indeed, Japan has long been strict about the physical appearance of its high school girls. In some establishments, wearing a ponytail is prohibited, the color of the socks or even that of the eyebrows is regulated, rules on the length of the skirts are applied. As far as hair color is concerned, some establishments require “photographic evidence to young girls whose hair is not naturally brown and straight”.
