The French group is betting on the fact that energy companies want to depend less on Russian Rosatom.

The war in Ukraine is moving the lines on uranium. The French group Orano wishes to increase its capacity for enriching this ore, the last step before the manufacture of nuclear fuel. From 1is February until April 9, the general public is called upon to give their opinion on this project to extend the current plant located in Tricastin (Drôme), within the framework of the National Commission for Public Debate.

The planned investment is one of the largest in French industry in recent years: “It will amount to an amount between 1.3 and 1.7 billion euros”, explains François Lurin, director of Orano Tricastin. It will increase production by a third. Knowing that this site is already very important: it produces 12% of the enriched uranium available in the world. Located in the immediate vicinity of the eponymous EDF power plant, Orano Tricastin is the only French nuclear site for the conversion and enrichment of uranium.
