The images went around the world. Migrants, thirsty, barely standing, were found in the Libyan desert, near the Tunisian border. All tell the same story: they were arrested and then abandoned in the desert by the Tunisian police. For the NGOs, the person in charge is Kaïs Saïed, the Tunisian president. In February 2023, he said in a statement that ” there is a criminal plan to change the composition of the demographic landscape in Tunisia ». “This speech has exacerbated a wave of violence (…) from Tunisian citizens who violently attacked black migrants, but also it sparked waves of arbitrary arrests”explains Salsabil Chellali, director of the office of Human Rights Watch in Tunis.
