In Ukraine, Washington again plays the role of “arsenal of democracy”

by time news

When Russia invaded Ukraine, the idea of a Russian defeat seemed far-fetched. Apparently, Vladimir Putin had a powerful, modern army, backed by a defense budget ten times that of Ukraine.

And even after the miraculous defeat inflicted by Ukraine on Russia during the first phase of the conflict, one could only wonder about the longer-term prospects.

Kremlin threats

Before the war, Russia’s economy was about eight times larger than Ukraine’s. Despite the effect of the sanctions on Russian production and the destruction caused in Ukraine by the invasion, this gap has undoubtedly widened even more today. One would therefore have expected that Russia would eventually prevail in what was turning into a war of attrition thanks to the sheer volume of its resources. But that’s not the case, it seems.

No one can know for sure how informed Putin himself is about the course of the war; is his terrified entourage ready to tell him the truth? Judging by the Kremlin’s way of attacking the outside world, issuing terrible but vague threats against the West and making self-destructive decisions in anger, cutting through natural gas deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria, one can assume that there is at least someone in Moscow who fears that time is not on Russia’s side.

And on the American side, the authorities are beginning to adopt a more optimistic discourse, on the possibility not only of repelling Russia, but even outright of a Ukrainian victory.
