It’s not a messy children’s room that you’re looking into in this photograph. It is the destroyed library of a primary school in the Ethiopian region of Tigray, a conflict area. The majority of the approximately 5.2 million people here have experienced violence and displacement, malnutrition and lack of drinking water. Many health facilities and schools were destroyed. In the midst of the confusion sit a girl and a boy, engrossed in books. They smile. This is the winning photo of the Unicef photo competition 2022, in which Unicef Germany honors images and reports by professional photojournalists. Personalities and living conditions of children are documented. Argentine photographer Eduardo Soteras took the photo in Tigray.
