At least 15 people have died in the past few days after methyl alcohol poisoning, said Dmitry Chukreev, project coordinator of the United Russia party, People’s Control, in the Sverdlovsk region. Workers of the market where illegal alcohol was sold have been detained, he wrote on Facebook.

According to Chukreev, the victims bought alcohol at the Botanical market. “After a sharp increase in fatal poisoning in the market, a large-scale operation of the security forces took place, the traders were detained. Chukreev told the E1.RU portal that deaths began to be recorded on October 11. “By Wednesday alone, there were already six people who had died after drinking alcohol,” he said.

The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Sale of goods and products that do not meet the requirements of the safety of life or health of consumers, resulting in the death of two or more persons by negligence”). According to the ministry, 18 people died from methanol poisoning, writes TASS.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Sverdlovsk region, police officers detained two suspects. These are local residents born in 1978 and 1967. After the incident, the prosecutor’s office demanded that inspections be carried out at the city’s market complexes.

Earlier in the Orenburg region 35 people died as a result of poisoning with surrogate alcohol. According to the IC, a 29-year-old resident of Orsk, who, according to the investigation, organized the illegal production and sale of dangerous alcohol, was detained, a 60-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman who sold this alcohol to the victims.
