After landing on the tarmac at Tetouan airport, the Airbus A320, carrying 176 passengers on board, mainly members of the Moroccan community living in the Netherlands, was greeted with a “water salute”, passing under an arch formed by jets of water.

In a statement to MAP, the director of Tetouan airport, Limouni Hassan, stressed that this new connection between Tetouan and Amsterdam, with two flights per week, will contribute to strengthening the dynamics that Tetouan airport has experienced in recent years, in terms of growth in air traffic.

Mr. Limouni noted that Tetouan airport is now connected to nine European destinations, namely Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Alicante, Marseille, Brussels, Charleroi and Amsterdam, stressing that a new connection with Bilbao should be inaugurated by the end of the month.

The official also noted that Tetouan airport, which welcomed 253,552 passengers in 2023, up 35% year-on-year, plans to welcome more than 300,000 passengers this year, thanks to these new connections, noting that around 31,000 passengers were welcomed by this airport platform last April, up 32% compared to April 2023.

To support this significant development in air traffic, the National Airports Office (ONDA) has launched a major development and expansion project for Tetouan airport, the first phase of which was completed in June 2023 with the commissioning of the new runway, which can accommodate large aircraft in better safety conditions, as well as a parking area that can accommodate up to five medium-sized aircraft.

The second phase of this project, launched last March, includes the construction of a new air terminal with a capacity of 900,000 passengers per year, as well as the construction of a new control tower.
