About two years ago the closure of The House Assembles (Seville), a space in which each week, activities related to the performing arts were programmed in an unconventional way. Artists from various disciplines were given the opportunity to continue developing, also, to propose projects that would hardly be accepted due to their experimental, “informal” (if I may use the expression) nature and other things of that nature.

In January of last year, it was published on the @laensambla Instagram profile that this project was reactivated, but today, it is manifested in an itinerant way. That is where the alliance with those who manage the Space Fury. Entity that at first is focused on the practice and promotion of work with ceramics and macramé, but for some time now they have been incorporating into their project, in a timely manner, the programming of cultural activities.

So, arriving at 2023 and the search for an event that adds to the shared programming of The White Night of Sevillethe representation of Silence of Incandescent Theater. That is: a contemporary play that, by its very nature, requires its spectators to take their seats already “warmed up.” Consider that when you go to a theater, you go through a series of architectural rooms that allow us to leave our daily lives in parentheses, in order to assume the role of just another spectator. And of course, Espacio Furia is a small place that does not have these characteristics.

Therefore, the members of La Ensamblá, those of Espacio Furia and those of Teatro Incandescente, carried out what they called a “theatrical experience”. Which consisted of those of us who had reserved our respective places, being summoned to a specific point on Ave. Llanes (Seville) to be guided on a route through the neighborhood to which Espacio Furia belongs. Before reading an introductory text, those of us in the audience were asked to remain silent until the performance of said company based in the capital of Andalusia was over. Now, all of us, suddenly, were immersed in a shared state of openness and concentration to whatever was offered to us.

Silence It is a work that, at all times, knows how to keep the public in expectation.. So much so that one loses track of time and almost of where one is. I found it impressive how the three performers were so integrated that it didn’t matter if two different actions were happening at the same time on stage: everything was ready to reintegrate and disintegrate, as if it were the breathing of a living being.

At the same time, the arrangement in space of Lucía Povedano, Candela Quiroga y Almudena Blanco (the latter is also the author of this work) was reconfiguring the environment according to how they moved and related to each other, going from two to three dimensions in a matter of seconds. That is to say: they emerged almost from nowhere, different degrees of depth, even fronts…, it was as if they had had the power to alter the places from where we, the spectators, observed what was happening on stage. This added to the fact that the composition of the drama made it possible for these professionals to move, with a simple trigger, from a memory to an event that is assumed to be happening in the present that their three main characters were experiencing. The above was reinforced as they embodied other characters, to illustrate/delve us into how they confronted the situations that led them to where they were at that moment.

I tell you about three characters whose desolation and frustration made them rush into the void together. What’s more, although what they live in the present has been reconstituted by the loss of their two parents, the shock What they suffered kept them in a limbo that they did not know how to get out of, until the moment they recognized each other as companions. Being that they have learned to live by keeping quiet about what they think and feel, to avoid a series of reprisals or, let’s say, things that could be “saved.” The fact is that they have also applied this to themselves, as a fundamental factor to understand the “sedimentation” process that has developed in them, to be what they are. Which makes it understandable that these three protagonists need to “detoxify,” even though this leads them, at certain moments, to argue among themselves, to justify the unjustifiable, to question whether it makes sense to continue living, etc.…

In this line, Silence It seems to me that it is an overwhelming and very emotional work, that even inside it, its characters stop to let out a breath. I don’t know how much one, as a viewer, has it within their power to change their destiny thanks to seeing a work as frontal, intelligent and poetic as it is. Silence. Even so, I am sure that people who want to continue living will have found in this work a reference to consult, so as not to feel alone in the midst of their daily struggle for their right to live a dignified and full life.
