As the advance voter turnout in Incheon for the 22nd general election broke the highest ever for a general election, attention is focused on whether the final voter turnout will exceed 70%.
According to the Incheon City Election Commission on the 9th, elections to elect the 22nd National Assembly members will be held simultaneously from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 10th. In Incheon, you can vote at a total of 738 polling places.
Of the 2,582,765 voters in Incheon, 776,408 participated in early voting on the 5th and 6th, recording an early voting rate of 30.06%. This is 19.25%p higher than the 10.81% at the 20th general election, and 5.31%p higher than the previous record of 24.75% in the 21st general election, the highest ever in a general election.
However, it was 1.22% points lower than the national average of 31.28% and ranked 13th out of 17 cities and provinces nationwide. This low voter turnout was clearly evident in the last six general elections.
In the last 16th general election, Incheon’s voter turnout was 53.4%, 3.8% lower than the national average of 57.2%, ranking 15th out of 16 cities and provinces nationwide. The ranking did not change in the 17th (57.4%) and 18th (42.5%) general elections, and fell further in the 19th (51.4%), ranking last among 17 cities and provinces (including Sejong City).
In the 20s (55.6%), it rebounded slightly by taking 14th place, but in the 21s (63.2%), it fell one place again to 15th place.
Local politics predict that the final voter turnout in the Incheon region for this general election will be around 70%.
This means that the conflict between the ‘government judgment theory’ promoted by the Democratic Party and other opposition parties and the People Power Party’s ‘Lee and Jo (Lee Jae-myung and Cho Kuk) judgment theory’ is strong, which means that it can attract more voters to the polls than in other general elections. However, it is unclear whether Incheon’s voter turnout will be higher than the national average.
A member of the political party said, “The current general election issue is a national phenomenon, not an issue in Incheon Bay.” He added, “Unless there is a major issue in Incheon Bay, it seems difficult for Incheon’s voter turnout to jump to the top.”
He continued, “This early voting rate is 5.31 percentage points higher than the 24.75% for the 21st general election, so the final voting rate is expected to be close to 70%.”
Voting on election day is only possible at polling places designated for each voter based on their place of resident registration. The location of the designated polling place can be found in the voting guide sent to each household, the polling place finder connection service, or the local government’s ‘voter list viewing system’.
Voters can quickly and accurately verify their identity by checking the voting time and location in the voting guide and then writing down the voter registration number listed together.
When voting, you must bring identification (including mobile ID) to verify your identity. An identification card issued by a government office or public institution, such as a resident registration card, passport, driver’s license, youth ID card, and school student ID card at each level, must contain the date of birth and include a photo to verify the identity of the applicant.
In the case of mobile IDs (mobile driver’s license, mobile national certification, etc.), the app execution process, photo, name, and date of birth are verified prior to voting, and image files saved through screen capture, etc. are not recognized as ID.
