Incidence rising again, warning of variants

by time news

DThe Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports 61,889 new infections within 24 hours. That is 2,548 fewer cases than on Tuesday a week ago, when 64,437 corona infections were reported. The nationwide seven-day incidence rises to 201.7 from 189.0 the previous day. 136 other people died in connection with the virus. This increases the number of reported deaths to 139,000.

However, the incidence does not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – due to overworked health authorities and because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only these count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

Here, too, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to the test behavior, late registrations or transmission problems. In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, as more and more federal states do not transmit to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, warned of the spread of the omicron subvariant BA.5 of the corona virus in Germany. “Corona is not over yet – this is proven by the violent outbreak of omicron in Portugal,” Montgomery told the “Rheinische Post”. BA.5 will also spread in Germany. Many people – including vaccinated people – would fall ill. Vaccinated people would have significantly milder symptoms symptoms.

The Robert Koch Institute recently reported an increase in the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 at low levels. BA.2 continues to dominate with 96.4 percent. BA.5’s share roughly doubled from 1.2 to 2.5 percent. Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach had also spoken out with a warning. “The particularly contagious BA4/BA5 variant is also on the rise here. This could be the next wave in the fall,” wrote the SPD politician on Twitter.
