Inclusive Research Symposium Focuses on Fair Opportunities for Health and Care

On Tuesday, the Center of Expertise Health held a symposium on Inclusive Research, aiming to address the need for fair and equal opportunities in health, care, and well-being. The event brought together about thirty interested parties, including professionals from practice, education, and research.

The symposium, led by teacher-researcher Anne-Mie Sponselee, emphasized the importance of making choices that do not exclude anyone consciously or unconsciously. Sponselee highlighted the need for more inclusive care and health, advocating for collaboration to achieve fair opportunities for a healthy life for everyone.

One of the key speakers at the symposium was health broker Julia Hiddink from GGD Brabant-Zuidoost, who presented the challenges of reaching target groups during research. She emphasized the need to ensure that research and activities are relevant and accessible to the target audience.

Lecturer Gera Nagelhout echoed the importance of inclusive research, emphasizing its social impact and ethical aspect. Nagelhout stressed the significance of involving people in research to make it more relevant and arrive at better questions and interventions. Ethical considerations and the right of individuals to participate in research that concerns them were also highlighted.

The symposium also featured a presentation by health scientist Charifa Zemouri, who addressed the issue of institutional racism in scientific research. Zemouri highlighted how scientific research and its results are often attributed to a person’s origin, leading to misunderstandings and consequences such as prejudice, discrimination, and stigmatization.

Zemouri called for a collective effort to address historical images and assumptions in research and education to promote inclusion and eliminate institutional racism. The symposium concluded with a call to build on each other’s knowledge and strive for improvement in research practices to ensure fair and inclusive opportunities for all.

The event opened the floor for comments and feedback, encouraging continued dialogue on the importance of inclusive research in promoting fair opportunities for health and care.]
