Those who benefit from the automatic declaration, informed by email, do not need to send anything. For others, just check the information pre-filled by the tax authorities, in the form sent to mailboxes before April 25. Only “first-time declarants” will have to complete it in full. Households must not forget, either, to fill in the boxes – if they are entitled to them – which allow them to take advantage of tax loopholes, such as personal services, real costs or even the tuition fees of their children.
For taxpayers forced to complete this tedious but necessary task online, the clock is ticking too. The inhabitants of departments 01 (Ain) to 19 (Corrèze) have until next Thursday, May 25, to declare their income. The deadline for those residing in departments 20 (Corsica) to 54 (Meurthe-et-Moselle) extends to Thursday June 1 and Thursday June 8 for all others.
Beware of late penalties
In case of delay, the General Directorate of Public Finance automatically applies a 10% increase in the amount of tax to be paid. The penalty increases as time passes. If the tax authorities are forced to send a “formal notice”, the penalty increases to 20% and then to 40% in the event that the taxpayer does not meet his duty within thirty days of the warning.
If households suffer from an “administrative phobia” or lack the knowledge to complete their declaration, the Order of Chartered Accountants organizes its “Hello Tax” operation from this Monday until May 26. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., professionals answer questions from individuals. Last year, 21,000 people requested their help.
