A price increase in sight. The cost of taxi-be in the capital will increase from Ar 600 to Ar 800 from August according to the decision of the members of the Union of Urban Transport Cooperatives (UCTU) meeting in general assembly last week.
The current economic context, the disastrous state of the roads were the arguments put forward by the UCTU to justify this increase.
In July 2022, the price of taxi-be serving the capital increased by 100 Ar, from 500 Ar to 600 Ar. The UCTU threatened to increase the ticket to 1000 Ariary but during negotiations between the carrier representatives with the executive, an agreement has been reached. The carriers undertook to reduce the increase they initially announced to bring it down to Ar 600, in exchange the State was to support the carriers to renew their vehicle fleet and thus improve their service. At the time, this 20% increase was not unanimous among UCTU carriers.
On their side, the taxi-brousses which go to Mahajanga and Toamasina have already revised their prices upwards during these holiday periods without any measure on the part of the State having been taken.
