The income poverty line for the food and non-food basket in urban areas increased 8.03% to $4,275.97 pesos in January 2023 from $3,958 pesos in January 2022. Similarly, the income poverty line for rural areas increased 9.3% to $3,074.51 pesos, which includes the food and non-food basket, from $2,812.34 pesos.

According to a report by Citizen Action Against Poverty, the labor gap in Mexico is enormous. About 8.4 million people, which represents 4 out of 10 people with formal employment registered in the IMSS (39%), do not earn enough to buy two basic baskets and thus overcome the poverty line.
