The “Global Prestigious Port Networks Aggregate Index Report” compiled by the Xinhua Index Research Center was recently officially released. Through a wealth of data, the report presents the overall picture of nineteen pioneering port networks around the world, projecting their advanced stage of development in the new era.

The text also analyzes the situation and structural changes in the maritime trade of the states of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, as this objectively reflects the trends of world trade.

According to the report, China’s port networks are following a development path where they are playing a leading role. In terms of integrated indicators, the networks of the central and southern Yangtze Delta, the Pearl Delta and Shandong, together with the networks of Tokyo, Japan, and New York – New Jersey, United States, rank among the group of world-class port networks. . Thanks to their high operational efficiency, advanced infrastructure and outstanding integrated service capabilities, China’s port networks are a community interconnected with the global port system and possess enhanced international competitiveness.

In terms of scale of production, Chinese port networks play a leading role at the international level, which is due to both the quantitative advantages of their integrated resources and the increased benefits of their cooperative development.

The report shows that regional networks in the Yangtze Delta and Pearl Delta enjoy strong support from the mainland and take advantage of its huge domestic market and economic development.

The port networks of the central and southern Yangtze Delta, Pearl Delta and Shandong have a high level of infrastructure and excellent performance in the operation of their projectors.

According to the director of the Research and Development Department of the Research Institute of International Ports and Shipping Indicators of the Xinhua Indicators Research Center, Li Chongchuen, the unified and coordinated management of port networks and the clear division of labor and cooperation between them will be the key to sustainable their development. The report was also released with the 2023 Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Sea Trade Index data, which showed that China’s merchandise exports accounted for 14.2% of global merchandise trade, with the country remaining the greater trading power of goods for seven consecutive years. Moreover, one-third of the increase in global maritime trade came from China, with the latter still a stabilizing factor in global trade.

Since 2010, China’s manufacturing industry has remained the world’s largest by size for fourteen consecutive years, at the forefront of import and export growth as well as port transportation. According to data from China’s Ministry of Transport, in the first half of 2024, the country’s ports handled a total of 8.56 billion tons of cargo (an increase of 4.6%). Container traffic reached 160 million TEUs, an increase of 8.5%. Simultaneously with the development of maritime transport, the construction of ports also continued.

In the first half of the year, China built seven new automated terminals with the country leading the world in terms of the number of such stations completed or under construction. Regular container shipping lines connect over a hundred countries and regions, with China leading in global maritime connectivity.
