In the Finca-Escuela La Rebeca, of the CCS Niceto Pérez, of Güira de Melena, they increase productivity through the use of biological products and the collaboration with projects of the Universities of Havana and Artemisa, Scientific Centers and Research Institutes, in function of different crops.

Rafael Báez Salgado, main producer of La Rebeca, clarified that at the moment they grow garlic in its elephant foot variety and have three sweet potato clones.

“Sweet potato B50, for example, has already been sampled and is planted in larger quantities. It is very early. Without applying any chemical, it is harvested after 90 or 100 days and if half of the chemicals are applied, it is harvested after 60 days,” he clarified.

They have also worked with cassava, corn, malanga and plantain. The methodology is to experiment on a small scale; taking into account the results, then in greater quantity and it is extended to other producers.

In La Rebeca they have an efficient irrigation and pumping system and are committed to the conservation and improvement of soils with biological means, an aspect in which they have the support of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Havana.
