New Delhi: The corona infection caused not only casualties but also many economic and psychological damage. The impact of the physical damage is only now beginning to emerge as the damage heals. To confirm this, it has been revealed that during the corona period, 85,000 people in India were infected with HIV.

Strict curfew was enforced across the country in the first wave of corona infection. The public was forced to come out only for basic necessities. This created a state of paralysis inside the homes of the public. Doctors had already warned that this could lead to high levels of physical harm. Doctors have warned that these infections could increase the number of infectious diseases.

Several research reports confirming this are emerging. However, this time a shocking information has come out through RTI without a report. In response to an RTI query, the National AIDS Control Agency of India said, “85,000 people across India were infected with HIV due to unprotected sexual activity during the corona curfew.”

During the last 2020 to 2021 curfew, 85,268 people were newly infected with HIV. The highest number of 10,498 people in Maharashtra, 9,521 in Andhra Pradesh and 8947 in Karnataka were affected during the curfew.

The number of HIV infections has been declining since 2011. While 2.4 lakh people were affected in 2011-12, only 1.44 lakh people were affected in 2019-20. It is noteworthy that although the number of people infected with HIV in 2020-21 was lower than in the past few years, the incidence of HIV during the curfew was much higher.

Doctors said that the infection was only detected during the first menstrual period and if unprotected sex increased in the days following and during the second menstrual period, it is likely to increase the number of HIV infections in the future.

From 2011-2021, 17,08,777 people were infected with HIV in India. Of these, 3,18,814 were in Andhra Pradesh, 2,84,577 in Maharashtra, 2,12,982 in Karnataka, 1,16,536 in Tamil Nadu and 1,10,911 in Uttar Pradesh.

Doctors have said that the only way to prevent HIV infection is to have safe sex and to raise awareness about it, as there is no cure for HIV.
