The incredibly preserved fossils were discovered in a deposit in China. Both animals were frozen by a volcanic eruption.
The teeth are planted in the blank. Claws rest on a hind leg as if to block it, others are literally prisoners of the jaws of the prey. A hunting scene, after all quite banal, between a predator and its victim. Except that it took place more than 100 million years ago, in the middle of the Cretaceous. And that it depicts a dinosaur devoured by a mammal while giant reptiles reigned supreme everywhere on the globe. This incredibly preserved fossil was discovered in 2012 in the Liujitun deposit in northern China, and it was described in the journal Scientific Reports July 18, 2023. It is now in the collections of the Weihai Ziguang Shi Yan School Museum in China’s Shandong Province, where it was studied with the help of a team of paleontologists from the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.
