Mumbai: The return of Virat Kohli as India captain in the second Test between India and New Zealand (IND vs NZ) marked a rare record in 132 years of Test history. Virat Kohli became the Indian captain and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson withdrew due to a hamstring injury. Tom Latham led the Kiwis in the second Test.
Ajinkya Rahane led India in the first Test in which Virat Kohli rested. The Kiwis were led by Kane Williamson. The Mumbai Test also witnessed the rarity of four captains leading the team in a two-match Test series. For the first time in 132 years in Test cricket, four captains will lead the team in a two-match Test series.
The team was previously led by four captains in the 1889 Test series between South Africa and England. Owen Dunnel led South Africa in the first Test, William Milton in the second Test, C. O’Brien Smith in the first Test and Monty Bowden in the second Test.
India won the toss and elected to bat in the Mumbai Test. India made three changes to the team that played the first Test in Kanpur in the second Test. Rahane, pacer Ishant Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who captained India in the last Test, were ruled out due to injury.
At stumps on the first day of the Mumbai Test, India were 221 for four. Mayank Agarwal (120) and Wriddhiman Saha (25) were at the crease. Apart from Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara was also out for zero today.
