jpnn.comJAKARTA – Political observer Ujang Komarudin considers independent candidates better than empty boxes. Because, empty boxes are a sign that Indonesia is in a democratic decline.

“From a democratic perspective, of course independent candidates are better than empty boxes, because independent candidates are supported by the people,” said Ujang when contacted, Friday (16/8).

This Al-Azhar University academic explained that with the presence of independent candidates, the people of Jakarta can feel the campaign of the gubernatorial candidates.

“Independent means, there are figures, there are figures, there are actors who can campaign, can socialize, can do the defense or have a vision, mission, program and promises,” said Ujang.

A single candidate pair against an empty box is possible in the 2024 Regional Elections. Law Number 10 of 2016 concerning the Election of Governors, Regents, and Mayors or Regional Elections accommodates and regulates in detail the various requirements.

Empty box is a term because of the emergence of a single candidate who has no competitors. So that in the ballot paper the opponent’s position is stated in the form of an empty box. (dil/jpnn)
