Capital market regulator Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has verbally ordered the resignation of all independent directors from the board of directors, including the chairman of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE).

This information has been confirmed by BSEC and two stock exchange sources.

It is learned that, as soon as possible, all individual directors including the chairman of CSE and all individual directors of DSE have been verbally instructed to resign. BSEC will take necessary action in this regard after receiving the resignation letter of the directors.

According to information, on Tuesday evening the MDs of the two stock exchanges were verbally instructed by the BSEC to resign all individual directors. BSEC has said that if these directors do not voluntarily resign under the verbal instructions, then the regulatory body will take steps to remove them. Since individual directors of stock exchanges are respected persons of the society, the BSEC initially issued this directive to allow them to resign voluntarily without removing them.

However, SEC executive director and spokesperson Mohammad Rezaul Karim did not confirm this.

A BSEC official said on condition of anonymity that this instruction was given in the evening.

Meanwhile, speaking to the DSE and CSE authorities, it is said that they received the instructions on Tuesday evening. Today Wednesday (August 21) will inform everyone about this instruction. Then they will decide on resignation.

There are seven independent directors on the board of directors including the chairman of DSE. Among these seven people, the chairman of the organization Hafiz Md. Hasan Babu resigned last Sunday night. Following his resignation, DSE currently has six independent directors. These six directors are army officer Brigadier General M Imran Hamid, Dhaka University teacher Abdullah Al Mahmud, former chairman of Tariff Commission Afzal Hossain, managing director of Oracle Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan Rubaba Daula, former banker Shahedul Islam and member of Human Rights Commission Kausar Ahmed.

Besides, CSE also has seven independent directors. They are businessman Asif Ibrahim, former banker Abdul Halim Chowdhury, information technology expert Kashif Reza Chowdhury, journalist leader Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Dhaka University teacher Ishtar Mahal, musician Mohammad Naqib Uddin Khan and Dhaka University Institute of Business Administration (IBA) professor Rezwanul Haque Khan.
