washington: Referring to India’s old ties with Russia, the US has urged New Delhi to use its relationship to appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Monday that India has a very old relationship with Russia. I think everyone knows this. We have encouraged India to use these old relations and better position with Russia. It should urge President Vladimir Putin to end the war, achieve lasting peace, respect the UN Charter, Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
In response to a question, Miller said, we will continue to emphasize this point to the Indian government. India is an important partner of ours in terms of relations with Russia. Miller had made similar remarks on July 9, soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi left Russia. He had said that India should try to end the Ukraine war. He has reiterated the same thing once again.

Narendra Modi was in Russia on July 8 and 9 for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. This was Modi’s first visit to Russia after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, his visit was closely watched by Western countries. Prime Minister Modi had told Putin on July 9, in the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, that peace talks amid bombs and guns are not successful. No solution to any conflict is possible on the battlefield.
India has strongly defended its special and privileged strategic partnership with Russia and has maintained momentum in relations with Russia despite the war in Ukraine. India has not yet condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has consistently advocated resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
