Kanteerava Stadium Clash Brings Panama to Bengaluru

India stepped onto the pitch at Kanteerava Stadium on Friday to face Panama in an international friendly match. The fixture brought a formidable challenge nearly 100 spots apart in the FIFA rankings, as Panama entered the match ranked 44th following a recent World Cup appearance, while India sat at 138th.

Head coach Khalid Jamil had requested a strong opponent ahead of upcoming matches against Brazil and Uruguay, leading to the scheduling against Panama. Despite the distinct gap in the global rankings, the Indian squad demonstrated strong competitive play from the opening whistle, keeping the visiting side under pressure.

Missed Chances and First-Half Breakthrough

Panama controlled possession early in the match, but India generated the first major scoring threat in the eighth minute. Anwar Ali sent a pass to Ashik Kuruniyan, who delivered to Akash Mishra. Mishra’s cross found Ryan Williams near the center of the box, though he was unable to convert the shot.

Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu turned away an early shot from Abdiel Rodriguez as Panama attempted to attack down the left flank. Another opportunity arrived in the 18th minute when Williams fired just wide of the goal post on an individual effort.

The breakthrough arrived in the 41st minute. Mishra executed a throw-in to Vijay Verghese, who launched a long ball from his own half toward Williams. Although three defenders surrounded Williams, none marked him, allowing him to break free and give India the lead.

Second-Half Equalizer and Squandered Opportunities

Panama altered its approach in the second half by widening the pitch and utilizing both flanks to stretch the Indian defense. The defensive pairing of Anwar Ali and Vijay Verghese repeatedly denied entry, while Vikram Pratap Singh battled evenly against Modelos on the right wing.

The visitors eventually found their breakthrough after the interval when Omar Valencia scored a striking goal to level the score at 1-1. Following the equalizer, India missed several additional scoring opportunities that could have altered the outcome, leaving players like Manvir Singh and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu reflecting on a match that slipped past a victory.

Ancelotti Comments Ignored Ahead of Kickoff

Ahead of the fixture, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti remarked on Indian football culture, stating that the country lacks a strong football culture and needs a better environment to foster grassroots talent. When asked about Ancelotti’s remarks during the pre-match press conference just twenty-four hours before facing Panama, Jamil declined to engage in debate.

The Indian coach noted that every individual holds the right to express their opinion. Jamil dismissed the commentary to maintain focus on the upcoming opponent.

“At this moment I am not thinking about this matter, everyone has the freedom to express their opinion. I only want to think about the Panama match.”

The draw halts a difficult run for the national team, which had gone four consecutive matches without a win since their last victory on March 31 during the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Hong Kong. With Sunil Chhetri absent from the squad and a search ongoing for a consistent goalscorer in the striking position following Williams’ arrival, Jamil’s side enters their upcoming fixtures against South American opponents carrying the defensive resilience shown against Panama.
