The movement, which began as a satirical online meme, evolved into one of the largest street protests in recent years, eventually forcing a high-ranking minister to step down to prevent anti-national forces
from exploiting the unrest.
The Cockroach Janta Party and the NEET Scandal
The catalyst for the uprising was a leak of the highly competitive medical college entrance test in May, which affected two million young people. The breach led to the cancellation of results and a government-mandated retest, sparking outrage among students and families who had made extreme financial sacrifices to prepare for the exams.

By early June, Dipke returned to Delhi to transition the digital movement into physical protests. The cause gained further momentum when activist Sonam Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike, lasting 26 days, in solidarity with the students.
Government Crackdowns and the Path to Resignation
The Modi government initially resisted calls for Pradhan’s resignation, attempting to quell the mobilization through a mix of diplomacy and force. On July 20, tens of thousands of students marched toward parliament. In response, authorities barricaded streets, closed metro stations, and restricted internet connectivity.
The situation grew more volatile when police launched baton charges and fired tear gas to scatter crowds, injuring dozens of students. The protests eventually spread beyond the capital to states including West Bengal, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

The movement crystallized a broader frustration with a capital-intensive economy that produces few productive opportunities for the youth. According to The Globe and Mail, the official youth unemployment rate exceeds 16 per cent, with many graduates trapped in the informal sector or the digitized gig economy in roles far below their qualifications.
The resignation is also viewed as a challenge to the BJP’s centralized power. Having lost its parliamentary majority in 2024, the party returned to office as leader of the National Democratic Alliance. The youth’s ability to force a senior leader’s exit mirrors previous successful mass mobilizations, such as the 2021 farmers’ agitation that suspended agricultural reforms and the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act between 2019 and 2024.
The fallout from the exam leak has left the government with a critical task: restoring trust in a testing system where millions of families invest their life savings.
