India’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday, July 25, 2026, following weeks of nationwide youth protests. The resignation follows allegations of paper leaks in competitive entrance exams and marks a rare concession by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to a mass youth-led dissent movement.
The departure of Dharmendra Pradhan, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), comes after a period of escalating tension that saw thousands of students and young professionals occupy New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar protest site. Pradhan announced his decision via a post on X, stating he had sent his resignation letter to the prime minister to prevent anti-national forces
from taking advantage of the volatility.
The Cockroach Janta Party and the NEET Scandal

The group’s name originated from a remark by India’s chief justice, Surya Kant, which was interpreted as comparing unemployed youth to cockroaches
. What began as an online parody of the ruling BJP transformed into a nationwide campaign for accountability and systemic reform.
The catalyst for the movement was a scandal involving the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the competitive gateway to medical schools. Allegations of leaked and sold exam papers in May led to the cancellation of results and a government-ordered retest, affecting millions of young people.
The human cost of the scandal became a central pillar of the protests. According to the CJP, more than a dozen students took their own lives after learning their results would be scrapped.
“The families of the children who committed suicide should receive compensation” of one crore rupees ($100,000).

Police Crackdowns and the Hunger Strike of Sonam Wangchuk

While the movement began in May, anger peaked this week after police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse thousands of protesters marching toward Parliament on Monday.
The momentum was further amplified by NBC News, an activist who conducted a 26-day hunger strike in support of the youth movement. He later described Pradhan’s resignation as a victory of peace, patience & perseverance
.
The government attempted to stifle the demonstrations through digital and physical infrastructure control. Federal authorities restricted mobile internet access and shut down 18 metro stations in New Delhi to limit the movement of protesters. Even on the day of the resignation, police were reported to have fired tear gas to scatter crowds in the capital.
Political Fallout for the Modi Government
Pradhan’s exit is a significant political blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Having served in the government since 2014, Pradhan was considered one of Modi’s most loyal ministers. He is only the second minister to resign following a scandal since 2014; the first was MJ Akbar in October 2018 during the #MeToo movement.
The protests also highlight a shifting demographic tension.
However, these measures failed to satisfy the CJP’s core demand for ministerial accountability.
The resignation sparked immediate celebrations at Jantar Mantar, where protesters distributed sweets and played the national anthem. Protester Tluanga Ralte, carrying a copy of the Indian constitution, described the event as a win for the constitution
, asserting that the young generation is here
.
Despite the victory, the movement’s leaders state the campaign is not over. The CJP continues to seek the one crore rupee compensation for families of deceased students and demands action against police officers accused of using excessive force during the crackdown. Whether the government will move beyond fast-track courts to address these specific demands remains the primary uncertainty.
