New Delhi (ANI): India has overtaken China with the highest number of universities listed in the QS Asia University Rankings 2024 released on Wednesday. The ranking shows the highest number of new entrants from India with 37. Seven Indian universities feature in the top 100 Asian universities.

According to the QS Asia University Rankings 2024, India now has the most represented higher education system with 148 distinguished universities. Compared to 148 Indian institutions, China’s number is 133 and Japan’s number is 96. IIT Bombay is the highest ranked Indian institute and is ranked 40th in Asia in the Quacquarelli Symonds University Rankings 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been emphasizing on the higher education system in terms of both its accessibility and quality and has said that institutions in the country are making progress in terms of quality education, student-faculty ratio and reputation. “Our educational institutions have made a mark for themselves in the world. Our institutions are improving rapidly in terms of quality education, student-faculty ratio and reputation,” he had said earlier.

India’s presence in the QS rankings has improved significantly in the last nearly 10 years under the Modi government.

While the QS Asia University Rankings featured 16 Indian institutions in 2014, the number has increased significantly to 148.

Even the last year has seen significant improvement. The QS Asia University List has improved by more than 30 universities to 148 in 2024.

In a speech at Delhi University in June this year, the Prime Minister emphasized that education is not just a process of teaching but also a way of learning.

He talked about the flexibility in the new National Education Policy for selection of subjects and mentioned the National Institutional Ranking Framework which is motivating institutions to improve quality as well as foster a sense of competition.

The Prime Minister said that the recognition of Indian universities is increasing due to future educational policies and decisions and attributed the change to the youth.

According to the QS Asia University Rankings 2024, IIT Bombay achieved an overall score of 67.2 out of 100, excelling in academic reputation (83.5) and employer reputation (96). In terms of faculty-student ratio, the score was 14.8, staff with PhDs (100), and papers per faculty (95.7). IIT Bombay staff with PhDs emerged as the strongest indicator.

According to the rankings, IIT Delhi is at 46th position, IIT Madras is at 53rd position and IIT Kharagpur is at 59th position. IISC Bengaluru has secured 58th rank.
