Male: The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party in the Maldives, welcomed⁢ the sudden shift in India’s⁢ policy towards the government of President Mohammad Muizzu. MDP President Abdullah Shahid expressed confidence that whenever the country faces a crisis,⁢ India will be the first to offer assistance.

Shahid⁣ made this ​statement following a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who is on a three-day visit to ‍the Maldives. Jaishankar has also inaugurated several​ development projects funded by India in the Maldives. This⁤ visit marks the first time ‌a major Indian leader has visited the Maldives during Muizzu’s presidency.

Abdullah ⁢Shahid demands an apology

Shahid demanded⁤ that the Muizzu government publicly apologize for the⁤ actions, lies, and irresponsible statements of its officials, which have severely damaged the Maldives’ foreign⁣ and economic standing. He shared ‍this sentiment on‌ social media.

‘India‍ will be at the forefront in helping Maldives’

Shahid emphasized that the Maldives has always relied on India for assistance, stating, “Whenever‍ Maldives faces an international emergency, India is‍ always ⁣the first to respond.” He criticized the current government’s aggressive rhetoric and anti-Indian sentiment, ⁣which ⁢he argued has damaged the Maldives’ ​reputation, economy, and international ‍relations.

India-Maldives relations deteriorated during Muizzu’s rule

Relations between‌ India and the Maldives strained last year when ⁢Muizzu, who⁢ has a pro-China tilt, ⁤took office. Within hours of taking office, Muizzu demanded the withdrawal of ‍Indian military personnel from the country. Muizzu expressed ⁣his commitment to strengthening the ⁣historical and close ‍ties between the two countries during his recent meeting ⁤with ⁣Jaishankar.
